Welcome to Port Welshpool
Port Welshpool is a picturesque coastal town on the sheltered waters of Corner Inlet, backed by the green hills of South Gippsland and looking towards the spectacular mountains of Wilsons Promontory. Unlike the region's traditional beachside holiday towns, Port Welshpool retains the character of a genuine working fishing and commercial port, with fishing boats, wharves and maritime activity forming an important part of its identity. Its calm, shallow foreshore, peaceful rural surroundings and magnificent coastal scenery make it a fascinating and less-touristed destination in South Gippsland.
Life at Port Welshpool
The town's defining attraction is the remarkable Port Welshpool Long Jetty, stretching approximately 800 metres into Corner Inlet and recognised as Victoria's longest jetty. Originally constructed in 1938, the historic jetty was extensively restored and reopened to visitors, offering spectacular views across the inlet and towards Wilsons Promontory. Port Welshpool Long Jetty The sheltered waters around Port Welshpool are popular for fishing, boating and wildlife, while boat tours provide an opportunity to explore the islands, waterways and coastline around Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory. The surrounding Corner Inlet Marine and Coastal Parks protect extensive wetlands, seagrass meadows, mudflats and rich marine habitats that support an abundance of bird and marine life. The Port Welshpool and District Maritime Museum also provides an insight into the area's fascinating history of fishing, whaling, shipping and maritime trade. With its combination of working harbour, historic jetty, tranquil waters and spectacular views, Port Welshpool offers a very different and authentic perspective on the South Gippsland coast.
